NEWPORT – Community Christian sailed into a lengthy spring break with a 1-0 girls soccer victory at Gramercy Christian on Tuesday, the fourth straight shutout win for the Cyclones, who improved to 9-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association’s North Region.
CCS head coach Carl Bradshaw explained that both teams took a lot of shots but “neither team took any great shots.”
“The field at Gramercy is much smaller that we are used to playing on, and our girls had a hard time adjusting in the first half,” he said. “In the second half, the girls made some adjustments with their passes and touches on the ball, and we controlled the field a majority of the second half.”
The Cyclones got their breakthrough goal in the 63rd minute when Abril Ventura took a throw-in from Barrett Godwin and drilled a shot after one touch.
“This gave us the goal that we needed and we held on and played strong defense to finish the game,” Bradshaw said.
Senior Abigail Jackson and Katelyn Brown sparked the defense while goalkeeper Claire Carter came up with five saves.
The Cyclones are off until Monday, April 17, when they host Trinity Christian of Greenville.
