Community Christian’s three straight wins to start its varsity baseball season were fast becoming a distant memory after the Cyclones dropped six in a row, the last four by a combined 56-3 margin.
Now that losing streak is a thing of the past after the Cyclones held off New Life Christian Academy 9-5 at home Friday, leaving CCS 4-6 overall and 1-3 in Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association play.
Senior Rylan Gay went the distance on the mound for the Cyclones. He gave up five runs, but only three were earned, on six hits and four walks while striking out nine. Gay also hit three New Life Christian (1-4) batters.
The Cyclones scored three runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to pull away to a 7-3 lead going into the fourth when New Life added two more run but could get no closer.
Gay also helped himself at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI while classmate Noah Pierce was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Senior Evan Barnhill doubled and drove in a run in three at-bats while freshman Tyler Spivey also had an RBI.
The Cyclones will visit Ahoskie Christian on Tuesday afternoon but then are off until April 25 when they visit New Life Christian in Rocky Mount in the first of three games to conclude the final week of the regular season.
