Ava Dunn scored three goals as her Community Christian varsity girls soccer ran its record to 4-0 with a 5-1 conquest of Beddingfield in the first round of games Saturday morning at The Brittany XVII at Gillette Soccer Complex.
The Cyclones turned to defense to stop the NCHSAA 2-A Bruins (2-3) and high-scoring freshman forward Iris Martinez.
“Our girls played played a very physical team in Beddingfield, and we played very smart and in control,” said CCS head coach Carl Bradshaw. “We passed the ball very well, and we used the entire field to score. Beddingfield is very well-coached by Ed Hunter, and we knew if we could contain Iris Martinez and KJ Hill, we would have a chance to be in the game. Our defense, led by Mary Abigail Lewin, did a solid job of marking these two young ladies, and we did a great job of jumping into their passing lanes so they couldn’t advance the ball forward with through balls.”
A critical moment in the game for CCS was when goalkeeper Claire Carter saved a penalty kick by the Bruins after the Cyclones were whistled for a foul in the box. Leading just 3-1 at the time, CCS sidestepped trouble when Carter made the stop, one of six for her on the day.
“I felt like this moment was a huge momentum swing in the game,” Bradshaw said. “Beddingfield had made several runs on the goal, and her stopping that shot, settled us back down, and really changed the game as a whole.”
Also scoring for the Cyclones of the fledgling Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association were Autumn Bradshaw and Katelyn Brown while Aspen Evans delivered two assists and Bradshaw and Godwin had one helper each.
The Bruins will visit Wilson Christian on Tuesday while the Cyclones will host Sallie B. Howard on Thursday.
